97.1 ZHT has partnered with Salvation Army and Granite Education Foundation to make a difference in the lives of kids in our community. Your school supply donations will help students get the start they need to a new school year. It's girls versus boys! Pick the pod you want to pack below!
I work with a family of four children who were chronically homeless. They had one outfit each. They were dirty and disheveled and hungry almost all of the time. All of the children had experienced trauma. They were in constant survival mode. They moved so frequently that all four children were in a constant state of fear wondering if they were going back to the shelter. Because their basic needs were not being properly met, it was so hard for them to ever feel successful (or even safe) in school. The Granite Education Foundation was able to provide clothing, hygiene kits, and school supplies for each child. These children that don’t have possessions to call their own in any context. This gave them that opportunity. They had clothes and supplies that they didn’t have to share and that were new. They had never owned a backpack until that point. Alleviating even a few pieces of their stress caused a dramatic shift in mood and behavior at school. We have such an amazing opportunity to create an environment where students feel loved, safe and taken care of. It really does begin with helping to meet those basic needs.
