Who are we?

The needs of the children we serve range from homelessness to no money to buy underwear for school. Granite Education Foundation is recognized as one of the nation’s foremost education foundations in one of America’s largest school districts. Since 1988, the Foundation has served students and teachers in the Granite School District by facilitating education programs and providing basic needs such as food, clothing, school supplies and much more. In a school district with 65% of children living at or below the poverty level and 70% of Utah’s refugees living within its borders, Granite Education Foundation works with individuals, community leaders and businesses to provide opportunities for all students and support for the district’s dedicated educators.

We have a fast-paced office culture where you can go from a board meeting one minute to unloading a truck full of food donations the next. This is an organization where you go home each day and know exactly how you were able to make a difference.

Internship Description

This is a communications focused internship, however, interns may choose to be involved in other areas of interest in the Foundation’s work from events to hunger programs, etc. This internship provides opportunities to make a difference for children and families as well as network and interact with community leaders in business, government, etc.

Storytelling is critical to this internship in order to raise awareness of the growing needs of children in Granite. This is done through hands on experience in public relations and marketing as outlined below.

Communications

  • Primary role will be managing all social media accounts for Granite Education Foundation

    • Assist in creating a social media posting strategy for Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn

    • Write and work with graphic designer to create posts

      • A small sample of the type of posts are below. Creative liberty and autonomy will be given to the intern to increase followers allowing them to take ownership of the project and build their resume.

        • Interviewing social workers, refugees, etc. to tell their stories (cameras, microphones, editing software, etc. are available)

        • Live posting and stories during events

        • Sharing statistics and the Foundation’s mission in a creative way

  • Assist in media relations and outreach for events including press releases and interviews

  • Work with the team to create effective and comprehensive marketing campaigns for events

  • Help with the creation of a monthly newsletter including stories and content selection

  • Assist in preparation for public speaking engagements and attend events 

Experience & Requirements

  • Understanding and experience in social media management and analytics

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Passion for service as well as innovation and creativity

  • Interest in exploring and furthering experience in marketing and communications

  • Preferred college junior or senior studying communications, marketing, non-profit management or other applicable majors/minors

  • Preferred previous experience in social media management but not required

Internship Details

Compensation: $10/hour

Hours: The hours per week are negotiable, however, a minimum commitment of 15 hours per week is required. If hired, a regular time commitment and schedule will be required. But, the initial creation of that schedule will largely be up to the discretion of the intern according to their schedule as long as it falls within business hours Monday through Friday.

Start and End Date: The need for an intern is immediate and once hired the start date will be as soon as possible. The end date of the internship is flexible.
